About Hawa Mahal

Hawa Mahal is called "palace of winds" because it has thousands of small window through which wind flow and keep the palace cool.  If you look from outside, from a distance, it looks like a beehive. It is not imagination but a real palace, which is in the pink city of Jaipur.  As a matter of fact, Hawa Mahal is believed to build for the women of the Royal Families, when they desired to have a look at the happenings of the outer world it is so because the royal families did not wish their women folk to be seen in public. Sawai Pratap Singh constructed Hawa Mahal in the year 1799. It is an amazing architecture that boasts of Rajput heritage and architecture. Lal Chand Ustad Hawa Mahal designed this marvelous architecture in red and pink sandstone. Hawa Mahal is a five-story, pyramid-shaped structure is made up of small casements, each with tiny windows and arched roofs with hanging cornices, exquisitely modeled and carved. The main gate opens into a huge courtyard that has two storied buildings on three sides. The eastern wing of the palace has another three stores. There are no stairs to access the upper floors, only ramps. Tourists for its excellent view of the city favor Hawa Mahal. The best time to view Hawa Mahal is at sunrise as sunlight filtering in through the latticed windows gives it a wonderful glow.
